The editors of Urge4cars and Bilrevyen are planning to undertake several long distance journeys. The first one will start when we pass 10.000 Facebook likes at the two sites combined.

The tour will start in Norway, and during a business week, we will try to reach 15 countries.
There will be reports en route from the places we visit and about the car we choose for the journey.

The choice of car, hotels and route will be made public as we approach the 10.000-mark.
But first of all we need some assistance from our readers. By telling your friends about us,
you can help us to get started.

This is the first of a series of journeys. We will try to make each trip longer and more demanding
than the previous one.

Update 1: The technical work is now finished. We are just waiting for our host to activate the webserver. After that http://www.urge4cars.com/ will be up and running!

We have decided to make Urge4cars the international version of the Norwegian website http://www.bilrevyen.no/. With this transition Urge4cars readers will have an instant access to the 6000 picture database. We will do our best to update Urge4cars regularly once we are on the new platform.

Open house at Renault

The French carmaker will bring not one, but two new drop-top models to the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The smaller of the two is the brand-new Wind, based on the Twingo. At 3.83 meters long, the Wind seats two and provides 270 litres of baggage space. The electric roof pivots open in just 12 seconds, and does not intrude into the baggage compartment.

The second newcomer is the Coupé-Cabriolet version of the current Mégane-series. The open-top Mégane is 4.485 mm long – 190 millimetres longer than the five-door hatchback. It has ample room for four people, and – thanks in no small part to a fixed glass wind deflector – provides draft-free driving for all four at speeds of up to 90kph. When used in conjunction with the removable mesh deflector screen located behind the front seats, it allows the backseat passengers to travel free from buffeting whatever the speed.

The two-piece roof lowers in 21 seconds at the press of a button. It offers a transparent glazed area of 0.47 square metres – a segment best, according to Renault. In this case, however, the lowered roof will have an effect on the available baggage space. With the roof down, the capacity is reduced from 417 to 211 litres.

Six engines will be available in Europe. The petrol engines are rated at 110, 130 and 140 HP, the diesels at 110, 130 and 160 HP.

GM to sell 55% stake in New Opel to Magna/Sberbank

Zurich. General Motors today announced that its Board of Directors supports a bid from the consortium of Magna International Inc. and Sberbank to buy a majority stake in its European Opel/Vauxhall operations.

Several key issues will be finalized over the next few weeks to secure the binding agreements, including the written support of the labor unions to support the deal with the necessary cost restructuring for viability and the finalization of a definitive financing package from the German government. The definitive agreements should be ready to sign within a few weeks, with closing to follow within the next few months. Under the deal, Magna/Sberbank will purchase a 55 percent stake in New Opel; GM will hold a 35 percent stake and employees will be provided a 10 percent stake.

“The hard work over the past two weeks to clarify open issues and resolve details in the German financial package brought GM and its Board of Directors to recommend Magna/Sberbank,” said Fritz Henderson, GM President and CEO. “We thank all parties involved in the intensive process of the last few months -- especially the German government -- for their continued support that enables this new venture. I’d also like to thank the Opel and Vauxhall customers for their continued loyalty. GM will continue to closely collaborate with Opel and Vauxhall to develop and produce more great cars, such as the new Insignia and the new Astra,” Henderson added.

The agreement will keep Opel/Vauxhall a fully integrated part of GM’s global product development organization, allowing all parties to benefit from the exchange of technology and engineering resources. The new ownership structure constitutes a new lean, efficient and independent organization for the Opel and Vauxhall brands. The current portfolio of Opel/Vauxhall cars and the models in the pipeline are a strong basis for future success.

Participating in GM’s global technology development and purchasing organizations secures important economies of scale for Opel/Vauxhall and other GM brands. For example, vehicles that represent new propulsion technologies, such as the Ampera extended-range electric vehicle, can only be brought to market in a joint effort.

“GM operates many joint ventures around the world and has proven in the past that this business model delivers the right balance of independence, innovation and synergies,” said John Smith, GM Group Vice President Business Development. “All parties will work hard to close the deal as soon as possible,” he added.
